Installing the Program
Second Site is available via download only. During the purchase process, you will be sent a link to download the installation program. Download the install program and remember where you save the file on your PC.
To install the program, double-click the icon for the install program. There are about a half-dozen steps in the install process, but you can accept the default values by clicking the [Next] button.
Make sure you read the License Agreement and understand the ramifations before you click [I Agree].
In most cases, you do not have to uninstall any prior version before you install a new version. For some upgrades, the Second Site News article announcing the new version will include a recommendation to uninstall the old version before installing the new. For the cleanest install, uninstall any existing version first.
You can install multiple versions on your PC if you install them into different folders, but all version will share the most recent versions of some of the shared components that are stored in the Windows system folder.
If you have Second Site 1, you do not have to uninstall Second Site 1 to install Second Site 2 or Second Site 3. See the FAQ entry about this topic in Second Site News #029.
See the Known Limitations page if you have trouble installing the program. It includes some advice for how to handle known installation issues.
Unlocking Second Site
After you purchase Second Site, you will receive an e-mail message that confirms the registration information you provided during the purchase process. The e-mail message will include a serial number.
Note Save the e-mail that contains your serial number and the rest of the registration information. If you lose the information, you will have to contact the place of purchase to have it sent to you again.
When you start Second Site it will open a dialog window where you must enter the registration information in order to unlock the program. The best way to do this is to copy and paste the information from the e-mail message into the data entry fields. Use Control-C to copy and Control-V to paste.
If you do not enter the registration information, Second Site will be limited to producing a web site for only a very small subset of the people in your dataset.
If your name or e-mail address change in the future, and for some reason you have to unlock Second Site again, you must provide the information as it was when you purchased the program.
