Peter J. Cloherty, 53, was state representative
Peter J. Cloherty, 53, of South Street, Brighton, a former state representative who was active in Democratic politics for nearly three decades, died yesterday at St. Elizabeth's Hospital of a heart attack.
Mr. Cloherty was political ally and close personal friend of James M. Curley and was assistant city greeter while Curley was mayor of Boston.
He worked diligently for John F. Kennedy's first campaign for Congress. Later he lost favor with the Kennedys and worked for Edward J. McCormack in his unsuccessful campaign against Edward M. Kennedy for the US Senate nomination.
He was a delegate several times to the Democratic National Convention and was an elector of the Electoral College when it elected Presidents Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He campaigned in behalf of Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey during the latter's campaign for the Democratic nomination for President in 1972.
Mr. Cloherty served in the state Legislature from 1959 to 1962.
In recent years he was public relations consultant for Charles E. Maquire Associates, an architectural and engineering firm.
Mr. Cloherty was a member of 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and of the Holy Name Society of St. Anthony's Church, Allston.
He was born in Newton and spent his early childhood in Brighton.
He leaves his wife, Marie V. (Ryan); two sons, Peter Cloherty Jr. and Mark R. Cloherty; and three daughters, Joan M., Marie L. and Elizabeth A. Cloherty of Brighton; his mother, Sarah Cloherty; and two sisters, Mrs. Sally A. DeCroteau of Melrose and Mrs. Mary Cardinal of Watertown.
There will be a Mass at 10 Saturday in St. Ignatius Church, Chestnut Hill. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Brighton.
